The Servitude body of works started as a meditative way to process deep emotions brought up during Black Lives Matter global protests in 2020, after the murder of George Floyd. This project is my first foray into fiber arts. I embroider cultural symbols on vintage white doilies with black cotton thread in appreciation of traditional craft and history, in the hope of instigating powerful emotional responses for respectful collective pride and resilience. Titled Servitude in remembrance and honor of American enslavement of black people, and in condemnation of police brutality and systemic racism.
